Walter Kennedy Pirate Flag – Hourglass & Skull Jolly Roger
When Your Time Runs Out
Size: 3×5 ft
The hourglass on a pirate flag wasn’t decoration. It was a countdown. When a vessel appeared on the horizon flying colors that featured an hourglass, every experienced sailor understood the message: your time is nearly gone. Surrender now, or watch the last grains fall.
Walter Kennedy — Irish-born street criminal turned Atlantic pirate — flew this imagery with the full weight of its meaning. His flag combined the hourglass, the sword, and the skull and crossbones into a single declaration that left no room for optimism. Few men who sailed under those colors had much patience for drawn-out negotiations.
Walter Kennedy — The Pirate Who Betrayed Black Bart
Kennedy’s path to piracy ran through some of the most dangerous company the Golden Age had to offer. He came up through the criminal underworld of Wapping, London, before finding his way into the crew of Howell Davis — one of the more cunning pirates of the era, known for talking his way into ports and prizes through sheer audacity rather than firepower.
When Davis was killed in an ambush at the Portuguese island of Príncipe in 1719, the crew voted a new captain into command: Bartholomew Roberts, who would go on to become the most prolific pirate of the entire Golden Age, capturing an estimated 400+ vessels. Kennedy sailed under Roberts through the early raids off the West African coast and into the Atlantic.
Then Kennedy made his move. While Roberts was occupied with a prize vessel, Kennedy seized one of the fleet’s ships, rallied a portion of the crew, and sailed for home — taking a significant share of the plunder with him. It was a brazen betrayal of a man not known for forgiving them.
The escape didn’t go smoothly. Kennedy’s crew was wrecked off Scotland, most were captured, and several were hanged. Kennedy himself made it back to London, where he attempted to retire into anonymity by running a brothel in Deptford. It didn’t hold. He was recognized, arrested, tried for piracy, and hanged at Execution Dock, Wapping in 1721 — the same stretch of Thames riverbank where scores of pirates met their end, their bodies left hanging at the waterline until three tides washed over them, as was tradition.
The Hourglass — Pirate Psychological Warfare
The hourglass was one of the most deliberately chosen symbols in the pirate flag vocabulary. Where the skull represented death as a concept, the hourglass made death immediate and personal — a direct address to the captain and crew of the targeted vessel. Your time is running out. Not eventually. Now.
Combined with the sword — action, violence, readiness — and the skull and crossbones — death’s certainty — Kennedy’s flag assembled the full argument in a single image. There was nothing subtle about it. That was entirely the point.
Pirate captains invested real thought in their flag designs precisely because a flag that caused a merchant crew to surrender without a fight was worth more than any cannon. Every battle risked lives and damaged prize vessels. The right flag, flown at the right moment, could win a confrontation before it started.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does the hourglass mean on a pirate flag? The hourglass was a direct psychological threat — it signaled to the targeted vessel that their time was running out and they needed to surrender immediately or face the consequences. It was one of the most intentional terror symbols in the pirate flag vocabulary, making death feel imminent rather than abstract.
Who was Walter Kennedy? Kennedy was a Golden Age pirate who sailed under both Howell Davis and the legendary Bartholomew Roberts before betraying Roberts and fleeing with stolen plunder. He was eventually caught in London, tried for piracy, and hanged at Execution Dock in Wapping in 1721.
What is Execution Dock? Execution Dock was a site on the north bank of the Thames in Wapping, London, used specifically for the execution of pirates and other maritime criminals from the 15th through 19th centuries. Condemned pirates were hanged at the low-water mark and left until three tides had washed over them — a ritualized public punishment meant to serve as a warning to sailors considering a life of piracy.
Is Kennedy’s flag historically documented? Kennedy’s flag design — featuring a pirate figure with hourglass and sword alongside skull and crossbones — is consistent with documented Golden Age flag imagery and the design vocabulary of his era. The hourglass motif in particular was well-established among pirates operating in the same networks Kennedy moved through.
Is this flag suitable for outdoor use? Yes — lightweight polyester flies easily in fair-weather conditions and light breeze. F
